J-STD-001 is a standard published by the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) that specifies the requirements for soldering electronic components to printed circuit boards (PCBs) and assemblies.

The standard is widely used in the electronics industry to ensure that soldered connections meet certain performance and reliability requirements.

RECERTIFICATION IPC J-STD-001 CERTIFIED IPC SPECIALIST (CIS)

The IPC J-STD-001 Specialist Certification is a two day course designed to provide hands-on experience with rework, repair, and modification in accordance with the relevant rules. It is important to note that this certification must be renewed every 24 months in order to remain valid. Anyone wishing to renew their certification should take the IPC J-STD-001 Specialist Certification Training Course within six months before the expiration of their current certificate. This training will ensure that they maintain their existing skills while learning new ones, helping them to stay up-to-date on all the latest developments in this field. Taking this training course is an excellent way for professionals to maintain their 24-month certification and continue to grow their knowledge base.

Anyone who wishes to renew their IPC certificate and is currently designated as a Certified IPC Specialist with a valid certificate must undertake training to do so. The training program for renewal of IPC specialist certification is designed to ensure that the professional has the knowledge and experience necessary to work in a job role where IPC standards are important. This program involves understanding key principles, such as handling electronic assemblies and printed circuit boards, and adhering to best practices.

The training program focuses on the core areas of IPC certification, including critical processes such as soldering, inspecting and reworking components. It also covers important topics like soldering iron maintenance, cleaning, inspection methods and tools, test equipment calibration, and defect recognition. In addition to these core areas, the training program also covers additional topics such as safety and environmental considerations, as well as quality management systems.

Once the training is completed, participants will be required to take an examination based on IPC standards and best practices. Upon successful completion of the examination, participants will be issued with an updated IPC certificate. This will enable them to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise of IPC standards in any role involving electronic assemblies or printed circuit boards.

What is IPC-J-STD-001?

J-STD-001 is a standard developed by the Joint Electronic Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC) that specifies requirements for the soldering of electronic components to printed circuit boards (PCBs). It provides guidance on the materials, processes, and techniques that should be used to ensure that electronic assemblies can withstand the stresses of the intended environment and operate reliably over their intended lifespan.

The standard covers both through-hole and surface mount technology (SMT) and includes requirements for hand soldering, wave soldering, and reflow soldering. It also includes requirements for cleaning and inspection of soldered assemblies, as well as guidelines for the design and layout of PCBs to facilitate soldering.

J-STD-001 is regularly updated to reflect the latest developments in soldering technology and to incorporate new requirements and guidance. It is an important resource for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, or maintenance of electronic assemblies.

J-STD-001 Definition

Curriculum:

Module 1 – Introduction – Basic Requirements (Mandatory)

The J-STD-001, basic document usage, and process requirements sections of this module provide information about the J-STD-001. All knowledge modules in the program must be completed and certified before certification to additional knowledge modules can be granted.

  • Materials
  • Component and equipment requirements
  • general soldering and assembly requirements
  • Cleaning
  • PCB and conformal coatings
  • Rework and repair

Module 2 – Wire, Terminal Assembly and Soldering

Lecture covers manufacturing process requirements for wire and terminal assemblies in addition to this additional knowledge module. In the hands-on/Practical portion of this additional knowledge module, students learn how to wire and mount terminals to the machine in order to obtain the second part of this additional knowledge module.

  • The basics of swaging terminals to PCBs
  • Attachment of wires to terminals

Module 3 – Through-Hole Components
Lecture covers process requirements for through-hole assemblies produced using a process and covers the process requirements for through-hole assemblies fabrication. The students receive instruction and hands-on practice for through-hole assemblies in the second portion of this additional knowledge module.

  • Details of the forming and placement of through-hole components on circuit boards
  • Soldering criteria of through-hole components

Module 4 – Surface Mounting of Components

In subsequent lectures, we will discuss the process requirements for surface mount assembly processes. In the hands-on/Practical portion of this additional knowledge module, students learn how to surface mount assemblies to the machine in order to obtain the second part of this additional knowledge module.

  • Placement of the surface mount components to a PCB/flex circuit
  • solder requirements of the surface mount components

Module 5 – Inspection Criteria

The lecture covers the process requirements for wire and terminal manufacturing processes in addition to surface mount and through-hole manufacturing processes. In this hands-on/practical part of the additional knowledge module, the students are given instruction and practice for inspecting wires and terminals, surface-mount assemblies, and through-hole components.

  • Inspection criteria from modules 2, 3 & 4
  • Process control methodologies such as sample inspections

Benefits of IPC-J-STD-001:

The IPC-A-600 standard provides guidelines for soldering electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Benefits of J-STD-001

The standard helps ensure consistent soldering quality across different manufacturing facilities and processes. This is important for maintaining high levels of reliability and performance in electronic products.

The standard provides guidelines for inspecting soldered joints to ensure they meet the necessary quality criteria. This helps identify and correct problems early in the manufacturing process.

The standard provides guidelines for controlling the soldering process, including temperature, humidity, and cleaning requirements. This helps ensure that the soldering process is repeatable and consistent, resulting in more reliable products.

The standard is widely used as a training tool for soldering technicians and engineers. It helps ensure technicians have the necessary knowledge and skills to produce high-quality soldered joints.

Certification & Recertification :

After completing the course, students will be presented with an open book written examination to assess their understanding of IPC J-STD-001 Procedures. Upon passing the exam, they will receive a Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) certification that is valid for two years.

For those who previously earned their CIS certification within the last two years, they can opt to take part in a relevant recertification course/training. The training is conducted by knowledgeable professionals who have experience in working with IPC J-STD-001 Procedures. Students who successfully complete the recertification training will be awarded with a new certification that is valid for two years.

This training provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively perform rework and repairs according to IPC J-STD-001 standards. The training also helps them stay up to date on changes in IPC policies and procedures. The highly skilled and certified trainers ensure that all students understand the basic principles of IPC J-STD-001 and can confidently perform any tasks related to it.

By taking part in this training, students can feel confident that they are fully prepared to handle any rework and repair tasks according to the IPC J-STD-001 standards.
