INDUSTRY PROVEN IPC TRAINING IN EUROPE
IPC/WHMA-A-620 is a joint standard developed by the Institute for Printed Circuits (IPC) and the Wire Harness Manufacturers Association (WHMA). It specifies the requirements for the production and testing of cable and wire harness assemblies used in the electronic and aerospace industries.
The standard covers materials, design, manufacturing, and testing requirements for cable and wire harness assemblies, and it is intended to ensure that these assemblies meet the necessary performance and reliability requirements.
The IPC/WHMA-A-620 is a comprehensive training document that provides the necessary information for assembling Cable and Wire Harnesses and their elements, as well as for the inspection of these components. This training document explains the details about tools, machines and materials needed for assembling cable harnesses correctly. It is comprised of multiple modules, each covering an important aspect of the entire process.
The training includes topics such as wire preparation, crimping, cutting, stripping and termination processes. The document also lists the appropriate types of connectors and other components for use in assembling cable harnesses and their elements. Moreover, it outlines the relevant requirements for the inspection of these Cable and Wire Harnesses.
The course provides attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and interpret the requirements and acceptance criteria of the standard.

With this training, cable and wire harness assemblers can ensure that their work meets industry standards and expectations. The IPC/WHMA-A-620 training helps provide best practice guidance that can be used on a daily basis.
Module 1 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C General content, applicable documents, wire preparation, measuring, and testing
This mandatory module contains content that applies to all other sections of the document, a listing of applicable documents, and the handling of electronic assemblies.
Module 2 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Crimping and Insulation Displacement
This additional knowledge module provides process standards for wire and cable connections that are formed by crimping and those formed by Insulation Displacement Connectors.
Module 3 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Soldered Terminals and High Voltage
The process requirements and acceptability requirements for wire and cable connections made by soldering and those connections used in a high voltage assembly are presented in this additional knowledge module.
Module 4 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Connectorization, Molding and Potting
Process requirements and acceptability requirements for wire and cable connections installed into various connectors and moldings and potting are presented in this additional knowledge module.
Module 5 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Splices
The wire and cable process requirements and acceptability requirements in this additional knowledge module are related to splices.
Module 6 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Marking, Securing, Shielding, and finished assemblies
This additional knowledge module provides process and acceptability requirements for wire and cable assembly marking, securing, shielding and finishing.
Module 7 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Coaxial Cables
The wire and cable process and acceptability requirements in this additional knowledge module include coaxial cables.
Module 8 – IPC/WHMA-A-620C Ultrasonic Welding and Solderless wrap
The wire and cable manufacturing process requirements and acceptability requirements for ultrasonic welding or solderless wrap connections are included in this additional knowledge module.
By following the standards outlined in IPC/WHMA-A-620, manufacturers can ensure that their wire harnesses are of consistent high quality, reducing the risk of defects or failures.
Wire harnesses that are fabricated and installed according to IPC/WHMA-A-620 are more reliable, as they are produced using best practices and procedures that are designed to reduce the risk of failure.
Using IPC/WHMA-A-620 can help manufacturers streamline their production processes, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity.
By producing high-quality wire harnesses that are reliable and efficient, manufacturers can improve customer satisfaction and strengthen their reputation in the market.
After successful course completion, all trainees are required to sit for both open and closed book written examinations in order to be certified as an IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certified Standards Expert (CSE). The examinations consists of three papers; namely the Enhanced Policy and Procedures Exam, General Knowledge Exam, and Standard Endorsement Exam.
The General Knowledge exam consists of thirty multiple-choice questions, which requires the trainee to complete it within a closed-book environment. On the other hand, the Standard Endorsement Exam consists of seventy multiple-choice questions and it is an open-book test that must be completed within two and a half hours. Upon successful completion of these examinations, the trainee will be awarded with a CSE Certification that is valid for two years. The training program provides an invaluable opportunity for professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in becoming a Certified Standards Expert. The thorough training session combined with the carefully designed examinations can equip the trainees with the necessary expertise required for a successful career in this field.
